For 20-year-old Garner, driving Monster Truck Wild Side an "absolutely crazy" good feeling
WHEATLAND, MO. (Oct. 20, 2021) - For 20-year-old Zack Garner, sitting behind the wheel of a powerful Monster Truck is a feeling that is difficult to describe.
“It’s a pretty crazy feeling,” Garner said of strapping into the seat of Wild Side, which he will pilot on Saturday when the O’Reilly Auto Parts Outlaw Monster Trucks Eve of Destruction returns to Lucas Oil Speedway.
“Once you’re in there, you’re basically a part of the truck and are along for the ride,” Garner said. “But being able to have 1,500 horsepower in behind you is absolutely crazy. You don’t really know what is going to happen or where it’s going to go.”
Wild Side is one of eight monster trucks scheduled to compete in the final event of Lucas Oil Speedway’s 2021 season. Avenger, Barbarian, Black Pearl, Tailgator, Miss Over Bored, Brutus and Over Bored also will entertain the fans.
The popular jet-powered truck Shockwave, with an ability to melt down cars with its three jet engines pumping out 36,000 horsepower, will wrap things up with a fire and smoke show.
Monster Truck racing is a way of life for Garner and his family, who hail from Fortville, Indiana. His dad, Jamey Garner, drives Over Bored and his step-mom, Deidra Ballard, drives Miss Over Bored.
Zack Garner said there are bragging rights on the line, especially with his dad.
“It’s probably more competitive than most people would ever admit to,” he said with a laugh, adding that he’s come out on top more often than dad over the last two years.
“I’ve been driving it about two years now,” Garner said of Over Bored. “My dad started painting them, then he got a chance to buy one. I started working my way up to crew man and finally started driving one myself.”
The full schedule has taken Garner all over the country and even into Canada. He’s driven in stadium shows at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, where the Dallas Cowboys play, and Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
“Performing in front of the fans and hearing them and having them cheer you on … it drives me,” Garner said. “It’s a pretty outrageous feeling knowing there’s that many there just to cheer you on.”
He said interacting with the youngsters, before and after the shows, is the best part.
“I used to be one of those kids who would come through the lines and now to be able to be someone they look up to, it’s an even better feeling for me,” Garner said. “That’s one of the best parts of the whole show for us.”
Kids of all ages are encouraged to attend the pre-race Pit Party from 5-6:30 p.m. Saturday and collect autographs and take photos. Drivers also will be passing out candy to kids trick or treating.
As for the Monster Trucks portion of the show and what fans can expect, Garner said it’ll be broken into three segments.
“We have ‘best trick,’ which is where you go out and do whatever two-wheel skill you want such as sky wheelies, some donuts, some slap wheelies, bicycles,” he said. “Then we go into head-to-head racing and then everybody’s favorite, ‘freestyle,’ where it’s about two minutes of whatever we can do, maybe throw in a backflip or something cool along those lines.”
A breakdown of the action:
Trick or Treat at Pit Party: Fans of all ages are encouraged to wear their favorite Halloween costume and trick or treat with the show performers at the Pit Party on the track prior to the action. They can get autographs and pose for pictures with the trucks and drivers and collect candy.
Monster Truck Back Flip: The back flip ramp will return this year with the trucks putting on a display of flips.
Pro and Stock Tuff Truck Racing: Local weekend warriors and professionals from around the country will battle it out. The competition is open and drivers wanting to enter their Tuff Truck can call (417) 887-9400 for entry info.
Mighty Monster Truck Ride: For just $10, fans can take the ride of a lifetime, circling the track in a real monster truck during the Pit Party, at intermission or after the show.
